âYou had no business to do anything of the sort. Itâs very wrong in a little girl to meddle. You shouldnât have gone into my room in the first place and you shouldnât have touched a brooch that didnât belong to you in the second. Where did you put it?â
âOh, I put it back on the bureau. I hadnât it on a minute. Truly, I didnât mean to meddle, Marilla. I didnât think about its being wrong to go in and try on the brooch; but I see now that it was and Iâll never do it again. Thatâs one good thing about me. I never do the same naughty thing twice.â
âYou didnât put it back,â said Marilla. âThat brooch isnât anywhere on the bureau. Youâve taken it out or something, Anne.â
âI did put it back,â said Anne quicklyâ âpertly, Marilla thought. âI donât just remember whether I stuck it on the pincushion or laid it in the china tray. But Iâm perfectly certain I put it back.â
