Cortés demands that Montezuma formally recognize the supremacy of the Spanish emperor. Montezuma assembles his principal caciques and addresses them, urging them to acknowledge the foreign king based on ancient tradition. The nobles agree to their ruler's will and administer the oaths of allegiance, which are recorded for transmission to Spain.
