The Illinois is a fine river, clear, gentle, and without rapids; infomuch that it is navigable forbatteaux to its fource. From thence is a portage of two miles only to the Chickago, which affords a batteau navigation of 1 6 miles to its entrance into lake Michigan. The IlUnois, about 10 miles above its mouth, is 300 yards wide.
The KaPiofkia is 100 yards wide at its entrance into the MilFifipi, and preferves that breadth to the Buffalo plains, 70 miles above. So far alfo it is navigable for loaded batteaux, and perhaps much further. It ^s not rapid.
The Ohio is the mod beautiful river on earth. Its current gentle, waters clear, and bofom fmooth and unbroken by rocks and rapids, a fingle iiiftance only excepted.
