There was no doubt that Superintendent Battle was taken aback. He fingered his chin thoughtfully.
âSir Oswald is right, Battle,â said George. âThis is the man. Any hope of catching him?â
âThere may be, sir. It certainly looksâ âwell, suspicious. Of course the man may turn up againâ âat Chimneys, I mean.â
âDo you think it likely?â
âNo, it isnât,â confessed Battle. âYes, it certainly looks as though Bauer were the man. But I canât quite see how he got in and out of these grounds unobserved.â
âI have already told you my opinion of the two men you posted,â said George. âHopelessly inefficientâ âI donât want to blame you, Superintendent, butâ ââ His pause was eloquent.
