âI am always at the captainâs orders. Show him in,â said the squire.
The captain, who was close behind his messenger, entered at once, and shut the door behind him.
âWell, Captain Smollett, what have you to say? All well, I hope; all shipshape and seaworthy?â
âWell, sir,â said the captain, âbetter speak plain, I believe, at the risk of offense. I donât like this cruise; I donât like the men; and I donât like my officer. Thatâs short and sweet.â
âPerhaps, sir, you donât like the ship?â inquired the squire, very angry, as I could see.
âI canât speak as to that, sir, not having seen her tried,â said the captain. âShe seems a clever craft; more I canât say.â
âPossibly, sir, you may not like your employer, either?â said the squire.
