âWell, I donât know about that. I donât think he makes any claims of that kind. But I do believe he has got something new.â
âThen for Heavenâs sake, man, write it up!â
âIâm longing to, but all I know he gave me in confidence and on condition that I didnât.â I condensed into a few sentences the Professorâs narrative. âThatâs how it stands.â
McArdle looked deeply incredulous.
âWell, Mr. Malone,â he said at last, âabout this scientific meeting tonight; there can be no privacy about that, anyhow. I donât suppose any paper will want to report it, for Waldron has been reported already a dozen times, and no one is aware that Challenger will speak. We may get a scoop, if we are lucky. Youâll be there in any case, so youâll just give us a pretty full report. Iâll keep space up to midnight.â
