âWhy, Benjy.â she said. She looked at me and I went and she put her arms around me. âDid you find Caddy again.â she said. âDid you think Caddy had run away.â Caddy smelled like trees.
We went to Caddyâs room. She sat down at the mirror. She stopped her hands and looked at me.
âWhy, Benjy. What is it.â she said. âYou mustnât cry. Caddyâs not going away. See here.â she said. She took up the bottle and took the stopper out and held it to my nose. âSweet. Smell. Good.â
I went away and I didnât hush, and she held the bottle in her hand, looking at me.
âOh.â she said. She put the bottle down and came and put her arms around me. âSo that was it. And you were trying to tell Caddy and you couldnât tell her. You wanted to, but you couldnât, could you. Of course Caddy wont. Of course Caddy wont. Just wait till I dress.â
Caddy dressed and took up the bottle again and we went down to the kitchen.
