After the death of his wife Margot, Jean Daquin, the patriarch of a proud Louisiana Creole family, finds himself crushed by despair. As a widower, Jean is barely able to take care of his daughter Mimi, but he marries Mary Robertson, the industrious daughter of a Chicago businessman. Mary takes charge of the family’s affairs and convinces Jean to move the family to Atlanta in order to pursue more lucrative business opportunities.
