I heard the song of breath, The gulf hollow with voices, Fused into one slow voice That never paused or was faint. Man, breathing his life, And with him all life breathing, The young horse and the snake, Beetle, lion and dove, Solemn harps of the fir, Trumpets of sea and whirlwind And the vast, tiny grass Blown by a breath and speaking. I heard these things. I heard The multitudinous river. When I came back to my life, My voice was numb in my ears, I wondered that I still breathed.
