Multiplication and Division of Fractions.

a complex fraction is to multiply both terms of the fraction by the L. C. D. of the fractions contained in the numerator and denominator.

  1. Simplify 3xx14.

Multiply both terms by 4, and we have 12x4x1.

  1. Simplify a+xaxaxa+xa+xax+axa+x.

The L. C. D. of the fractions in the numerator and denominator is (ax)(a+x).

Multiply by (ax)(a+x), and the result is

&(a+x)2(ax)2(a+x)2+(ax)2&=(a2+2ax+x2)(a22ax+x2)(a2+2ax+x2)+(a22ax+x2)&=a2+2ax+x2a2+2axx2a2+2ax+x2+a22ax+x2&=4ax2a2+2x2&=2axa2+x2.

Exercise 50.
