âTo be sure!â said my aunt, patting her cheek again. âYou are right.â
âYou are not offended,â said Dora. âAre you?â
âWhy, what a sensitive pet it is!â cried my aunt, bending over her affectionately. âTo think that I could be offended!â
âNo, no, I didnât really think so,â returned Dora; âbut I am a little tired, and it made me silly for a momentâ âI am always a silly little thing, you know, but it made me more sillyâ âto talk about Jip. He has known me in all that has happened to me, havenât you, Jip? And I couldnât bear to slight him, because he was a little alteredâ âcould I, Jip?â
Jip nestled closer to his mistress, and lazily licked her hand.
âYou are not so old, Jip, are you, that youâll leave your mistress yet?â said Dora. âWe may keep one another company a little longer!â
