system here considered is not a material system, e.g., a gas, but a purely energetic one. If, however, the principles of thermodynamics hold quite generally in nature, as indeed we shall assume, then they must also hold for the system under consideration. That is to say, in the case of any change occurring in nature the energy of all systems taking part in the change must remain constant (first principle), and, moreover, the entropy of all systems taking part in the change must increase, or in the limiting case of reversible processes must remain constant (second principle).
