in form, and there would seem to be little difficulty in classing the Cipactli as an earth-dragon, similar in nature to the cosmic monster of Chinese art and mythology. The fact, too, that in the native paintings we frequently observe the sun-god in the act of being swallowed by the Cipactli strengthens the analogy with the Chinese example.
THE PEOPLING OF THE EARTH
The precise manner in which the earth was peopled by the gods is also a subject concerning which great variety of opinion is shown by the older
