Now the old Devil was vexed that the brothers had not quarrelled over the division, but had parted peacefully; and he summoned three imps.
âLook here,â said he, âthere are three brothers: Simon the Soldier, TarĂĄs the Stout, and IvĂĄn the Fool. They should have quarrelled, but are living peaceably and meet on friendly terms. The fool IvĂĄn has spoilt the whole business for me. Now you three go and tackle those three brothers, and worry them till they scratch each otherâs eyes out! Do you think you can do it?â
âYes, weâll do it,â said they.
âHow will you set about it?â
âWhy,â said they, âfirst weâll ruin them. And when they havenât a crust to eat weâll tie them up together, and then theyâll fight each other, sure enough!â
âThatâs capital; I see you understand your business. Go, and donât come back till youâve set them by the ears, or Iâll skin you alive!â
