âââI showed them the path to glory, but they did not follow it,âââ Prince AndrĂ©y continued after a short silence, again quoting Napoleonâs words. âââI opened my antechambers and they crowded in.â I do not know how far he was justified in saying so.â
âNot in the least,â replied the vicomte. âAfter the murder of the duc even the most partial ceased to regard him as a hero. If to some people,â he went on, turning to Anna PĂĄvlovna, âhe ever was a hero, after the murder of the duc there was one martyr more in heaven and one hero less on earth.â
Before Anna PĂĄvlovna and the others had time to smile their appreciation of the vicomteâs epigram, Pierre again broke into the conversation, and though Anna PĂĄvlovna felt sure he would say something inappropriate, she was unable to stop him.
âThe execution of the Duc dâEnghien,â declared Monsieur Pierre, âwas a political necessity, and it seems to me that Napoleon showed greatness of soul by not fearing to take on himself the whole responsibility of that deed.â
