Las proporciones relativas de la artillería pesada y ligera varían también dentro de amplios límites. Es un gran error tener demasiada artillería pesada, cuya movilidad ha de ser muy inferior a la de los calibres más ligeros.
Una prueba notable de la gran importancia de contar con un fuerte armamento de artillería la dio Napoleón después de la batalla de Eylau. Los grandes estragos causados entre sus tropas por los numerosos cañones de los rusos le abrieron los ojos a la necesidad de aumentar los suyos propios.
Con maravillosa energía, puso a trabajar a todos los arsenales prusianos, a los del Rin y aun a los de Metz, para incrementar el número de sus piezas y fundir otras nuevas con el fin de poder utilizar las municiones capturadas previamente.
En tres meses duplicó el matériel y el personnel de su artillería, a una distancia de mil millas de sus propias fronteras, una hazaña sin paralelo en los anales de la guerra.
