También debemos alejarnos de la distinción entre supraconsciente e inconsciente [Ober- und Unterbewußtsein], que se ha vuelto tan popular en la literatura reciente sobre las psiconeurosis, ya que es precisamente ella la que parece enfatizar la equiparación de lo psíquico y lo consciente.

La función de la conciencia.

¿Qué papel le queda en nuestra representación a la otrora todopoderosa conciencia, que lo eclipsaba todo? Ninguno otro que el de un órgano sensorial para la percepción de cualidades psíquicas.

Según la idea fundamental de nuestro ensayo esquemático, solo podemos concebir la percepción consciente como la actuación propia de un sistema especial, para el cual se recomienda la abreviatura Cc. Al sistema nos lo representamos en sus caracteres mecánicos de manera similar a los sistemas perceptivos

The psychic apparatus which is turned towards the outside world with the sensory organ of the W systems is itself an outside world for the sensory organ of the Bw, whose teleological justification rests upon this relationship. The principle of hierarchical recourse, which seems to govern the structure of the apparatus, confronts us here once more.

The material of excitations flows to the Bw sensory organ from two sides: from the W system, whose excitation—conditioned by qualities—probably undergoes a new processing before it becomes conscious sensation, and from the interior of the apparatus itself, whose quantitative processes are felt as a series of qualities of pleasure and unpleasure when they have reached certain alterations.
