—Pero ya sabes, Dodo, que si alguna vez llegaras a casarte, te vendría mucho mejor tener alcurnia y belleza —dijo Celia, pensando que el señor Casaubon no había sido ricamente dotado con esos dones, y que sería prudente advertir a Dorothea a tiempo.

—No te preocupes, Kitty; tengo pensamientos muy distintos sobre mi vida. Jamás volveré a casarme —dijo Dorothea, tocándole la barbilla a su hermana y mirándola con afecto indulgente.

Celia estaba amamantando a su bebé, y Dorothea había ido a darle las buenas noches.

—¿De veras⁠—del todo? —dijo Celia—. ¿Ni nadie en absoluto⁠—si fuese realmente muy maravilloso?

Dorothea shook her head slowly.

“Not anybody at all. I have delightful plans. I should like to take a great deal of land, and drain it, and make a little colony, where everybody should work, and all the work should be done well. I should know every one of the people and be their friend. I am going to have great consultations with Mr. Garth: he can tell me almost everything I want to know.”

—Entonces serás feliz, si tienes un plan, ¿Dodo? —dijo Celia—. Tal vez al pequeño Arthur le gusten los planes cuando sea mayor, y entonces podrá ayudarte.

Esa misma noche le informaron a sir James que Dorothea estaba en realidad rotundamente en contra de casarse con nadie en absoluto, y que iba a entregarse a «todo tipo de planes», exactamente igual que solía hacerlo.
