Terminado su trabajo aquella noche, el diablillo de Simón acudió, según lo convenido, a buscar al diablillo de Iván para ayudarle a someter al tonto. Llegó al campo, buscó y buscó; pero, en lugar de su camarada, solo encontró un agujero.

—Evidentemente —pensó—, le ha ocurrido alguna desgracia a mi compañero. Debo ocupar su lugar. El campo está arado, así que habrá que vérselas con el tonto en el prado.

De modo que el diablillo fue a los prados e inundó el prado de Iván con agua, lo que dejó toda la hierba cubierta de barro.

Iván returned from the pasture at dawn, sharpened his scythe, and went to mow the hayfield.

He began to mow, but had only swung the scythe once or twice when the edge turned so that it would not cut at all, but needed resharpening.

Iván struggled on for awhile, and then said:

“It’s no good. I must go home and bring a tool to straighten the scythe, and I’ll get a chunk of bread at the same time. If I have to spend a week here, I won’t leave till the mowing’s done.”

El diablillo oyó esto y pensó para sus adentros:

«Este tonto es un hueso duro de roer; no puedo convencerlo por las buenas. Debo probar con otra treta».

Iván regresó, afiló su guadaña y se puso a segar. El diablillo se deslizó entre la hierba y comenzó a agarrar la guadaña por el talón, clavando la
